The Ophthalmology experts at St. Elizabeth Physicians provide comprehensive, diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical services to help diagnose and treat a wide variety of conditions and diseases related to the eye. Our board-certified physicians can help with everything from healthy eye exams to special problems that require retina, glaucoma, cornea, pediatric or oculoplastic specialists.

Common eye conditions that can be treated include:

  • Blepharitis
    Inflammation or dandruff-like scales and particles formed along the eyelashes or on or around the eyelid, caused by bacteria or dysfunction of the eyelids’ oil glands
  • Cataracts
    A clouding of the lens of the eye, causing blurred vision and/or glare problems
  • Chalazion
    A cyst in the eyelid caused by the inflammation of blocked oil glands; appears as a lump on the eyelid with symptoms such as soreness, redness, swelling, sensitivity to light, increased tearing, and heaviness of the eyelid; may require antibiotics, steroid injections, or surgery
  • Diabetic Retinopathy
    Damage to the retina, the layer of cells that light strikes to create an image, which develops most often in those with high blood pressure from diabetes
  • Dry Eye
    Stinging, burning, dryness, irritation, and/or tearing of the eye due to underproduction of lubricating tears
  • Glaucoma
    Damage to the optic nerve, which carries the images we see to the brain, caused by unreleased pressure within the eye
  • Headaches
    Eye disease is one of the least common causes of headaches, often accompanied by blurred vision, halos around lights, and/or extreme sensitivity to light
  • Macular Degeneration
    Breakdown of the macula, a small area of the retina that allows you to see fine details, causing blurriness, dark areas, or distortion in central vision, but leaving peripheral vision intact
  • Ocular Rosacea
    Redness, irritation, or burning of the eyes and eyelids, treated with antibiotics and/or artificial tears
  • Retinal vein occlusion
    Blockage of retinal veins resulting in complications such as swelling, eye pain, spots or clouds in the field of vision, and vision loss, most often from high blood pressure
  • Strabismus
    A condition where eyes are misaligned and point in different directions, most common in children, causing reduced vision which may become permanent if untreated
