Gastroenterology

The board-certified gastroenterologists at St. Elizabeth Physicians have been recognized as top doctors in the area specializing in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of disorders of the pancreas, liver, colon, gallbladder, esophagus, stomach, and intestines.

Our gastroenterology specialists focus on providing education about digestive diseases, diagnoses, and most appropriate and effective treatment options. As experts in their field, our providers utilize the latest technology and medical advances to treat conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, acid reflux and indigestion, pancreatitis, motility problems, malabsorption, inflammatory bowel disease, and peptic ulcers.

Each year, St. Elizabeth Physicians’ gastroenterologists perform thousands of minimally invasive non-endoscopic and endoscopic procedures. Common endoscopic procedures include:

  • Colonoscopy - The endoscopic exam of your large intestine and part of your small intestine with a camera that provides visual diagnosis of problems like polyps and allows for biopsy and possible removal
  • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) - A procedure that involves a thin tube inserted through the mouth and into the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract to view a section of your small bowel or intestine
  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) with therapeutic biliary procedure - A procedure that combines the use of x-rays and an endoscope to provide the most accurate diagnosis if you have problems in the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, or pancreas
  • Gastrostomy tube placements - When an internal, alternate feeding tube placement is done if you have experienced a stroke, an operation on the mouth, throat, or neck, or if you have an altered state of consciousness and are not awake enough to use the normal swallowing mechanism
Common non-endoscopic procedures (not requiring an endoscope to perform) include:

  • Esophageal motility and/or 24-hour pH monitor test - A test in which a thin tube is inserted through your nose or mouth and into your stomach to test pressure readings designed to enable the diagnoses and treatment of complaints of chest pain, acid reflux, difficulty swallowing, and food digestion
  • IV Remicade therapy for Crohn's disease - One of the most effective medications available to help treat Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis (a form of inflammatory bowel disease)
